Breen blasts two B qualifiers for Olympics

In an outstanding display of sprinting in Perth 21 year old Melissa Breen ran 2 Olympic “B” standard performances in the space of 90minutes.
Fully recovered from a freak neural issue in Adelaide last week that prevented her from pushing out of the blocks Breen exploded out this time to record 11.35 (1.7w) in the first race. She was then able to back this up with arguably a better run in the second race recording 11.36 with a less supporting wind of 0.9m/s.
“I knew from training that I was in PB shape so it is a good positive indicator to run these times in competition conditions.”
It is a huge weekend for the MattyB DEPT with athletes competing in four states. Breen in Perth along with Brandan Galic who ran 10.98 in the 100m.
Also last night three athletes competed in Canberra highlighted by a huge PB by 19 year old Rachael Carnegie running 57.84 in the 400m taking over a second of her best. Jesse Matthews also ran a season best and under 50 seconds in the 400m (49.81) to take victory over Luke Storta (50.33).
Birthday boy Ollie Wurm runs a 400m at AVShield in Victoria on Saturday hoping to challenge his PB of 47.62.
To round of a huge weekend the 400m Hurdlers are hoping for pleasant conditions down in Tasmania at the Hobart Track Classic. Lauren Boden and Chloe Jamieson will compete in the Women’s while Brendan Cole and honorary member Mowen Boino (training with squad for 3 months) will run in the Men’s event.

BJ and Boden shine at Hunter Track classic

Brendan Cole and Lauren Boden took the 400m Hurdles double on a windy night in Newcastle at the Hunter Track classic. Despite having to wait over 10 minutes at the start line for missing hurdles Brendan Cole executed a solid race in his first for the season over the barriers.

“To open up with my fastest ever 400m Hurdles like Lauren did is exciting but I really want to take my times to the next level quickly now and get that qualifier out of the way.”

Cole finished in a time of 50.41 wich is only 0.91 off the A standard of 49.50 which is something he will look to run well under in the next 6 weeks.

Lauren Boden continued her great early season form knocking another 0.5 seconds off her season best with a 56.12. Lauren used the tail wind down the back to run some 14 stride hurdles which is something only a few girls in the world do.

“Matty basically told me just before the call room that the wind has got up a bit so let’s do 14’s. I went with his judgement and they felt really comfortable in the race so that is a good sign”.

Training partner Chloe Jamieson continued her return to racing with a time of 62.34 for 6th and Rachael Carnegie finished 5th in the under 20 400m in her first ever appearance at a major domestic meet.

Brisbane Track Classic 2012

It was a great night for the MattyB DEPT. crew in Brisbane at the track classic which focused mainly on relay events plus some individual events like the rarely run 300m.

Melissa Breen ran the second leg in the Women’s 4 x100m team which took victory in 44.01. Lauren Boden ran the second leg in the Women’s 4 x 400m that ran 3.34.12 while Chloe Jamieson ran the third leg for an Australian Junior in the same race (3.48.37). To round out the relay involvement Brendan Cole ran a superb leg (45.7) of the Men’s 4 x 400m team that finished in a time of 3.05.84.

In individual events Melissa Breen ran a solid 11.51 to finish second behind Sally Pearson (11.25). Part time member Daniel Batman, currently living in Sydney,  ran 10.95 in the “B” 100m.

The highlight for the squad, however, came in the second last event of the evening with Lauren Boden running 38.20 in the 300m to take a special victory over Jana Pittman. Boden running in the lane outside Jana set the race up in a positive fashion and with 100m to go was 5 metres in front and this margin didn’t change down the straight with Boden strong right to the finish.

Overall an extremely satisfying night for the squad.
