Articles on the Squad

Next Stop Stawell

A squad of 11 MattyB DEPT. athletes will will travel down to Stawell this Easter for a long weekend full of racing.

The squad will be lead by World Championships representative Brendan Cole who will use this weekend as his final preparation leading into the National Championships to be held in Perth from 16-18th April which also double as the Commonwealth Games trials. Cole who already has an “A” standard in the 400m Hurdles will look to gain automatic selection with victory in 2 weeks time.

Cole has 6m in the Stawell Gift but will be aiming primarily on the 200m where he made the final last year. He has the same handicap of 9m so is sure to be competitive.

18 year old Brendan Matthews will return to Stawell on a mission after making it through to the final last year only to be struck down with a hamstring injury depriving him an opportunity to run off for glory. Unfortunately Matthews has only 5.75m which is 1.5m less than last year but with some improvement in his sprinting and a recent personal best of 10.72 in the 100m he is sure to be in the mix. He will also run in the 70m event and possibly the 200m.

Luke Storta (6m) the 2009 Queanbeyan Gift winner will run in a new race at the carnival that puts 6 of the major gift winner throughout the year in a Gift winners gift. Luke will also run in the Gift and 70m events.

Derek Collinge (8.25m) the 2010 Burramine Gift winner will have a busy weekend competing in the Gift, 400m and 550m events.

Tom Burbidge (8.75m) the 2009 Temora Gift winner will return to Stawell where he made the semi final last year hoping to go even better this year.

Ramona Casey will fly the flag for the females. After an outstanding year in the NSW gifts including victories at Macksville Women’s Gift, Queanbeyan 70m, Gilgandra Women’s Gift and Gardens 300m she will compete in the Women’s Gift and 400m and also the open 70m event.

Other finalists from gifts this year running from the squad include

  • Jesse Matthews – Finalist in the 400m Bendigo Black opal will run in the Gift, 70m and 400m.
  • Grant Billingham – Winner of the Canberra Gift Novice will run in the Gift and 200m

Lauren Boden breaks into world class 55 second 400m Hurdles range at Sydney Track Classic

Lauren Boden breaks into world class 55 second 400m Hurdles range at Sydney Track Classic

In what was one of the best nights of track and field performance in a long time in Australia Lauren Boden took advantage of the great conditions and competition to smash her personal best running 55.75. This is also a Commonwealth Games A qualifying performance and moves her to number 6 on the Australian all time list.

Lauren set up the race hard into a slight headwind down the back to gain a decisive break of seasoned athletes Tamsyn Lewis. Lauren never looked back and finished strongly to claim victory. Training partner Tarin Nevin finished 7th in 64.00.

19 year Melissa Breen also had a night to remember going within 0.01 to claim victory in the 100m over Olympic silver medalist Sally McLellan. Both girls run a B standard for the Commonwealth Games with Sally getting the victory in an extremely tight photo finish. The run showed much improvement in Breen’s start which enabled her to get into the race and keep the pressure on Sally right to the line.

Brendan Cole improved on his season best to finish second in the 400m Hurdles behind legend Jamaican Danny MacFarlane in a time of 50.46 which is another Commonwealth B qualifier. Despite some sickness in the lead up the run was impressive enough to show that he will be back under 50 seconds very soon.

Boden and Matthews run 200m PB’s

The MattyB DEPT. produced some outstanding results yesterday at the AACT competition.

Lauren Boden used some sprinting to freshen up for the Sydney GP and produced a 200m PB running 23.90 (0.6w) which is her first time under 24 seconds. She also ran the 100m in 11.91 (1.ow) earlier in the evening.

Brendan Matthews made a huge step forward in running a World Junior qualifier in the 200m. Running with training partners Brendan Cole (21.30) and Grant Billingham (22.07PB), Brendan ran 21.62 which is only 3 tenths from the standard needed. It has been a great 3 weeks for Brendan who now appears to be over his neural hammy problems and he will be right in the mix when the Junior Nationals champs take place on 11-14th March in Sydney.

Melissa Breen had another strong hit out in the 100m running 11.52 (1.0w) which is only 0.02 outside the B standard for Commonwealth Games. Breen has now put together a wonderful series of consistent races and with the big meets almost upon us she will go into these meets with confidence knowing she is in great shape and ready to step it up to the next level.

Tarin Nevin also produced a PB in the 200m against Lauren running 26.26. This run was even better considering she had run a 400m Hurdles earlier in the program running 63.59.

Patrick Elliott produced a 11.40 (1.3w) to finish second in the Men’s 100m.
