Breen takes Women’s Stawell Gift

10 of the crew made the annual trip to Stawell for Easter this year. Melissa Breen carried on the strong tradition of the MattyB DEPT. at the famous Stawell Gift by taking out the Women’s 120m Stawell Gift.

After running a simply amazing semi final Breen stormed to victory in the final to take the sash and $2500 in prize money.

To make it more impressive Breen ran from the scratch mark to become the first woman to win from this mark.

“I wasn’t sure if I won but when I was told I couldn’t keep the smile off my face” Breen explained.

To top of a great weekend for Melissa she also took out the Fashions on the Field competition during ladies day.

Recently named Olympians Lauren Boden and Brendan Cole ran in the finals  on Monday. Lauren finished 5th in the Women’s 400m giving 26m head start to the next athlete. Brendan competed in the Gift winner Gift final coming 5th off 1.75m.

Other squad results included Kev Matthews finishing a close 2nd in the Veterans 100m final. He also made the Veterans 300m  final.

Cole claims Albury 400m Gift

BJ Cole has again provided the crowd with an amazing display of 400m running to take victory in the Albury Gift off the backmark of 7m. Cole made a decisive move down the back straight to get himself into striking distance and then showed great strength to hold off the rest of the field to claim victory by 2 metres.

This victory comes off the back of his victory in the Burnie Gift over the Christmas period in Tasmania.

“Today’s gift was a fantastic carnival and I really felt good out there today. I know I am biased but I think my training partner Tom Burbidge did a great job in setting up and running the Albury Gift.” Cole was the ambassador of the Albury Gift that has been put back on the calendar by 2010 Stawell Gift winner Tom Burbidge.

Cole will now firmly shift his focus towards running the Olympic qualifying standard in the 400m Hurdles with races in Hobart, Perth and Sydney in the next 3 weeks leading into the Olympic trials on the 2-4th March in Melbourne.

In other squad results Kevin Matthews took victory in the frontmarkers 70m and also the Vets/Women’s 300m. He was also third in the vets 120m

Rachael Carnegie also made the final of the 300m and finished 8th in the Women’s Gift final.

Brandan Galic ran strongly for 4th in the 70m final off the back mark of 2.25m He also ran 2nd in the Backmarkers final with training partners Brendan Matthews 3rd and Ollie Wurm 6th in the same race.

Luke Storta and Jesse Matthews made the final of the Men’s 400m to finish off a great day for the MattyB DEPT.

Congratulations also to Jesse Matthews for taking victory in the 70m at the Wangaratta Gift meeting the day earlier.

BJ takes Burnie Gift

5 time national 400m Hurdles champion Brendan Cole has captured his first ever gift win taking out the prestigious Burnie Gift.

Running from 5.25m Cole took victory by a mere 3 thousands over local athlete Edward Gates with former Stawell Giftwinners Adrian Mott third. The time was a quick 12.13

After an lengthy wait as the officials studied the photo finish Cole and the MattyB DEPT  crew exploded with excited.

“Matty came over to me and thought I had won and I had a feeling a had got it on the line but when you announced me as the official winner I felt like a little kid in a candy store.”

30 year old Cole will now focus on securing a berth in the 2012 Olympic team for London.

“Victory today in this gift is an extremely positive way to start off what is a huge year for me. I will probably retiring at the end of 2012 so to finally win a gift is a great feeling.”

In other squad results Melissa Breen completed  a wonderful series of races to finish second in the Women’s Gift behind LJ Hilditch.

“To break 14 seconds off 0.25m is the fastest I have ever run on the grass so I just can’t wait to get on a track and run now.”

Tom Burbidge, Luke Storta and Lauren Boden all made their 400m finals with Tom finishing third.

The squad finished the 3 carnivals with 5 victories, multiple finalists and over $19,000 in prize money.
